The following performance is by no means my favorite adaptation of Shakespeare, but its certainly interesting. This particular event took place in my hometown, Miami, recently and I heard about it because my sister interviewed the producer of the project, Carson Kievman. Kievman conceived the idea to make Hamlet into an opera. Kievman's Hamlet was a work several decades in the making and is still being edited and changed. Though I wasn't able to see the opera myself, I wish I could have and I enjoyed reading about the conception and performance of the piece.
Here is a link to a review of the opera - http://southfloridaclassicalreview.com/2012/03/kievmans-long-gestating-opera-hamlet-shows-promise-still-needs-work/.
Here is a post on my sister's blog about the work - http://groundlings.blogspot.com/2012/10/hamlet-opera.html
And here is an official article she was asked to write on bloggingshakespeare.com - http://bloggingshakespeare.com/shakespeare-in-south-florida-part-ii
There's a long history of opera composers turning to Shakespeare. Do you think HAMLET lends itself to this treatment? http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/history/stories/synopsis.aspx?customid=306
