Romeo + Juliet

Spoken in Shakespeare's original text but set in the crazy, ostentatious "music video" age, Baz Lurhmann's adaption of the classic love story is nothing if not unique. The movie, which takes place in fictional Verona Beach, is indubitably quite unlike anything Shakespeare himself would have imagined. Guns replace swords and Hawaiian shirts replace doublets but the essence of the tragedy remains the same. In fact, by placing the story in a modern setting but keeping the script true to the original, Lurhmann accomplishes the difficult task of making the story more accessible to a younger generation of consumers.
